The 1,000-word rule
Why learning the first 1,000 words of a language, in frequency order, is the single highest-leverage decision you can make as a beginner — and why almost no app does it.
If you learn only the 1,000 most common words in Latvian — and nothing else — you’ll understand roughly 80% of everyday speech.
Not 80% of one specific conversation. 80% of the average everyday conversation. It’s a startling number, and it’s real. It falls out of a mathematical regularity called Zipf’s law, which describes how words distribute across natural language: a small number of words carry most of the weight.
The math is the same in every language
In English, the top 1,000 words account for about 80% of everyday spoken use. In Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Latvian — same shape. The specific coverage percentage varies a few points depending on how you define “everyday,” but the qualitative story doesn’t change.
You do not need the whole dictionary. You need the top 1,000 words, and you need to know them cold.
Why most apps get this wrong
Look at the first ten lessons of any popular language app. You’ll learn colors. Animals. Foods you rarely eat. “The bear is purple.” That’s not because those words are frequent. It’s because they’re easy to illustrate with cartoons.
The apps optimize for engagement — “look how much fun this is!” — which means they optimize for concrete, image-friendly nouns. Frequent words tend to be short, abstract, and grammatically load-bearing: and, because, would, usually, there. Those are hard to draw. They also happen to be the words you actually need to understand a sentence.
The order matters
Learning 1,000 random words gets you nowhere. Learning the 1,000 most common words, in frequency order, gets you conversational.
More precisely: it gets you to the point where the remaining unknowns in a sentence are usually one or two content words — the ones you can guess from context, or ask about, or look up. Comprehension arrives at the point where you know most of the connective tissue.
That’s why frequency order isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s the whole game.
